How to measure AI visibility: metrics, tools and a practical plan

Measure AI visibility with a practical plan: distinguish brand mentions, citations and competitors, understand the metrics and act on the evidence.

The short answer

What matters first.

  • AI visibility describes whether and how your brand appears in AI answers. A mention is not necessarily a citation or recommendation.
  • Repeat a fixed set of relevant buyer questions. Compare equivalent engines, countries, time periods and question groups.
  • Use the answers to find specific information gaps. A higher measured value does not guarantee reach or revenue.

What is AI visibility?

AI visibility describes whether and how a brand appears in an AI answer: as a named option, a recommendation or a linked source. A traditional search position cannot answer all three questions. An answer may mention your product but link to a comparison site. Your website may also be cited without your product being recommended.

Start with the buyer question. “Which software helps a small agency manage client approvals?” tests discovery among competing solutions. “What is Brand X?” tests what the system says about a named business. Keep those perspectives separate rather than merging them into one success metric.

SEO remains relevant. Google places GEO and AEO within its existing SEO practices. See Google’s explanation.

Which metrics matter?

Define what you will count before evaluating results. Four separate views make a small measurement project easier to interpret:

  • Mention rate: the proportion of valid answers that name your brand. Count a brand no more than once per answer so repeated wording does not inflate the metric.
  • Citation rate: the proportion of valid answers with at least one source link to your defined domain. A URL appearing in plain text is not automatically a source citation.
  • Competitive share: for a simple manual comparison, divide your brand’s mentions by total mentions across a predefined set of brands. Keep that set fixed. Tools may define share of voice differently.
  • Context: is the brand recommended, merely listed, criticized or excluded for a particular need? Read the answer. Positive wording does not establish factual accuracy.

These rates describe your sample. They do not mean a third of all users see your brand in AI answers. A composite score is also a diagnostic within a defined methodology. It cannot substitute for audience data, qualified inquiries or sales.

A five-step measurement plan

1. Collect real decision questions

Use questions from sales conversations, support and your website. We suggest 15 to 25 questions as a manageable starting workload, not a statistical minimum. Include discovery, comparison and specific requirements: “Which tools suit a five-person agency?”, “What are alternatives to Vendor X?” and “Which solution supports multilingual approvals?”

2. Fix the measurement scope

Record exact wording, language, target market, engine, available model and retrieval date. Also record whether web search was active and whether you used an API or a consumer interface. An API request is not an identical replay of a personalized chat session. Separate branded and unbranded questions, countries and engines.

3. Keep the answers

Store response text, cited URLs and the status of each request. Manually review ambiguous brand names. A timeout is not an answer without a mention. A successfully returned answer with no mention does belong in the denominator. Write down these rules so you can apply them consistently next month.

4. Repeat comparable checks

A single run is a snapshot. Weekly comparisons can be practical initially; frequent changes may justify more checks. Choose a cadence that fits your question and budget. When adding prompts or competitors, continue reporting the original question set separately. Otherwise, a change in scope may look like a performance improvement.

5. Connect each finding to a decision

A useful monthly review asks: Which buyer questions do we miss? Which sources and competitors appear there? Which page or piece of information should we improve? Add available website visits and qualified inquiries as a separate outcome layer. An increase after a change is a correlation, not proof that the change caused it.

Template: document your AI visibility checks

Copy these fields into your working document. Create one record for each question and run, and retain the full response alongside it.

FieldWhat to record
Question and groupExact prompt; discovery, comparison or branded question
ConditionsDate, time, language, target market, engine and available model
Access methodAPI or interface; web search, personalization and other known settings
StatusValid answer or error with its reason
Brand mentionYes/no; manually verify ambiguous names
SourcesCited URLs; your own domain and external sources separately
Competitors and contextNamed comparison brands; recommendation, listing or limitation
Finding and next actionAnswer evidence; affected page; documented change

This is a manual measurement template, not a description of a FameScan export format. Aggregate only comparable records and report failed requests separately.

Which tools and data sources help?

Repeated controlled requests help compare selected questions and brands. They describe your measurement scope, not total demand. Use them to inspect individual answers and investigate gaps.

Google Search Console now documents a generative AI performance report. It shows impressions for links to your website in AI Overviews and AI Mode, with dimensions including page, country and device. These are different from mention rates for prompts you select. Google lists insufficient impressions among possible reasons for a missing report. See the current report documentation.

Bing Webmaster Tools adds AI Performance data about source citations across supported Microsoft and partner experiences. Bing cautions that aggregated citation figures do not indicate a page’s position or role within an individual answer. Do not interpret them as traditional rankings. See Bing’s explanation of the metrics.

Your web analytics adds identifiable visits and subsequent actions. It does not count mentions without a click. Keep these measurements alongside one another rather than adding them into an apparently complete AI reach figure.

When is an AI visibility tool useful?

Manual checks suit a small starting sample. Repeated comparisons increase the work needed to document and verify results. When evaluating a tool, check its actual engine and market coverage, how it handles failed requests, and whether you can inspect answers, sources and calculation rules. A score without this evidence is not enough for a sound decision.

Compare the measurement scope too: the same questions, equivalent conditions and a stable competitor list. A one-off visibility check answers a different need from ongoing monitoring. The right choice depends on your workload and budget.

From measurement to improvement

Start with the clearest evidence of a gap. If an answer misrepresents your offer, check public product information. If a key requirement is missing, address it precisely on the relevant page. If competitors appear through comparison content, investigate which decision criteria your own website has not answered. Do not copy unsupported claims.

For example, your software may support several languages while its product page explains neither the languages available nor the feature’s limitations. Publish those facts, link the page from your product overview and repeat the same questions. This improves the information available; it does not guarantee a mention.

Also check that important pages are accessible, internally linked and eligible for the search appearance you want. Google recommends helpful original content and a clear technical structure. Its generative search features do not require a special AI file or schema markup. Use the official guidance and its limitations to avoid unsupported tactics.

How FameScan helps

FameScan organizes measurement around projects, buyer questions, engines and target markets. Inspect prompts and cited sources, compare competitors and gaps, and review recommendations with supporting evidence in the Action Center. The Visibility Score combines several signals using the product’s own methodology.

The current product catalog includes ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Claude. Retrieval methods and web search vary by provider. API-based engines represent countries through the prompt; Google AI Overviews uses a country parameter. Interpret results within those conditions rather than expecting identical answers in personal accounts.

Begin with a clear question set. Brand discovery provides a starting point; the dashboard and further recommendations require an active subscription. An active trial of that subscription also qualifies. See how the process works. The goal is an evidence-backed decision about what to improve next, without promising a particular ranking.

Frequently asked

What is a good AI visibility score?

There is no universal target. Results depend on questions, engines, competitors and measurement conditions. Compare your progress within a stable measurement scope and inspect the underlying answers.

Can I measure AI visibility for free?

You can manually check a small set of questions and record the answers for an initial view. Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools add data for your own website. These sources answer different questions and do not provide a complete view of every AI system.

How soon will improvements show up?

There is no reliable deadline. Retrieval, indexing and source selection are controlled by the providers. Record changes and repeat comparable checks rather than treating one answer as evidence of success.
